Carteret, II, p. 42; Clouzot, 267; Vicaire, VII, coll. 994; Christian Galantaris, Verlaine, Rimbaud, Mallarmé, Catalogue raisonné d’une collection, no. 94, p. 129.

“Certain copies include an additional piece: ‘Chasteté’, which adds significant value to them.” (Clouzot, p. 267)

“A few copies contain, inserted, a poem, ‘Chasteté’ (2 leaves), offered to readers; it was supposed to appear, untitled, in Bonheur.” (Carteret, II, 425).

Copy complete with the poem ‘Chasteté’ on a double loose leaf, which the publisher Léon Vanier had printed without the poet’s knowledge, as a specimen for a collection to be published untitled in Bonheur.

“A disparate collection composed of previously unpublished pieces unearthed from Cellulairement, written earlier in prison or inspired by sentimental episodes both pleasant and less avowable, this supposed panel of a polyptych was meant, according to Verlaine, along with Sagesse, Amour, and Bonheur, to tell the story of his conversion. It also includes the poem in memory of [… ] Rimbaud: Laeti et errabundi and at the end the Ballade à Sappho. Since he also incorporated the six lesbian sonnets from Les Amies and the six from Filles, it can be said that the collection is steeped from beginning to end in sensuality.” (Galantaris, Verlaine, Rimbaud, Mallarmé, 2014, p. 158).
